WhatsApp is officially rolling out its new message summary feature, allowing users to quickly summarize long messages and chats with the help of Meta AI. First teased back in May, the feature is now live—starting with English-speaking users in the US.

This new tool is designed to help you catch up on long chats or group conversations without having to scroll through every single message. Whether you’ve been away for a few hours or missed an entire conversation, message summaries make it easy to stay updated. And importantly, other users won’t know that you’ve summarized their messages.

Powered by Meta AI, Protected by Private Processing

WhatsApp made it clear that this feature is backed by its Private Processing technology, a system Meta introduced earlier this year. According to WhatsApp’s blog, “Message Summaries uses Private Processing technology, which allows Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages or the private summaries.”

In simple terms, the AI does the work without compromising your data. The messages never leave your device, and the summaries aren’t visible to anyone but you.

Opt-In and Privacy First

The good news? Message summaries are disabled by default. You’ll need to manually turn them on if you want to use them, giving you full control over whether or not AI is involved in your chats.

And for those who want even more control, WhatsApp offers Advanced Chat Privacy, which disables any AI features entirely. So if you’d rather keep your conversations completely untouched by automation, that’s an option too.

Where and When Is It Available?

Right now, message summaries are:

  • Only available in English
  • Rolling out exclusively in the US

WhatsApp has confirmed that the feature will expand to other regions later this year, so if you’re outside the US, you’ll need to wait a bit longer.

This update is part of WhatsApp’s broader push to integrate AI in a privacy-conscious way, giving users tools that are actually useful—without compromising trust. If you’re in the US, keep an eye out for the option to enable message summaries in your settings. If not, expect it to roll out in more regions in the coming months.
