Borderlands 4 is shaping up to be a wild ride, and the latest update might make things a bit smoother—literally. Gearbox just confirmed that an optional combat radar will be included in the game when it launches this September. This new feature comes directly in response to fan requests, showing that the devs are still listening as the release date gets closer.
The announcement came from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who dropped the news in a recent Twitter thread.
According to him, the team hadn’t originally planned to include the radar, but as more players spoke up asking for it, the devs found a way to sneak it in just before the game entered pre-launch QA.
Heads up, though—the radar won’t appear in preview builds, so expect to see it in action only when the full game drops.
The best part? It’s completely optional and off by default. So if you’re into that immersive, no-HUD chaos or just prefer a cleaner screen, you can skip it.
But for anyone who misses having a minimap or just wants help tracking enemies in big open fights, the radar will definitely come in handy.
What Else Is New in Borderlands 4?
The radar isn’t the only fan-requested feature making its way into the game. Gearbox is also adding:
- Manual healing items
- Expanded weapon customization
- Mission replays
All great news for longtime fans hoping for a little more control and replayability.
Still, it’s been a mixed bag of news leading up to launch. On one hand, fans were relieved to hear the game won’t be priced at $80. But on the other, Borderlands 4’s high PC requirements have raised some eyebrows—more than half of all Steam users may not meet the minimum specs.
There’s also been some heat on Pitchford himself for how he’s handled feedback on social media, especially around pricing. That said, many fans are feeling cautiously optimistic, especially with the franchise showing signs of moving in a better direction after Borderlands 3.
We’ll know soon enough if these changes hit the mark—Borderlands 4 officially launches this September. Until then, it’s clear Gearbox is trying to deliver a game that balances old-school fun with quality-of-life improvements the community’s been asking for.
