Dungeons & Dragons just dropped a new Unearthed Arcana playtest document, and it’s packed with arcane power. Featuring nine mystic subclasses, the release includes reimagined classics and introduces two brand-new archetypes: the Tattooed Warrior Monk and the Ancestral Sorcerer.
For those unfamiliar, Unearthed Arcana is D&D’s official public playtest platform—where players get to try new content and offer feedback before it gets locked into future books. With this latest release, fans of high magic and spell-heavy classes have a ton to sink their teeth into.

A Mix of Classic and New Magic
Here’s the full list of subclasses included in the latest Unearthed Arcana:
- Cleric – Arcana Domain
- Fighter – Arcane Archer
- Monk – Tattooed Warrior (NEW)
- Sorcerer – Ancestral Sorcery (NEW)
- Warlock – Hexblade
- Wizard – Conjurer
- Wizard – Enchanter
- Wizard – Necromancer
- Wizard – Transmuter
This playtest gives long-standing favorites like the Arcane Archer and Hexblade Warlock some mechanical upgrades. The Arcane Archer now gains more Arcane Shots, better ranged weapon options, and core features earlier, while the Hexblade gets Unyielding Will and Malign Brutality—further refining its identity from the earlier horror-themed UA.
Meanwhile, the Arcana Domain Cleric picks up new magical flexibility and expertise in the Arcana skill, giving them more ways to tweak their spells and adapt to different roles.
And for Wizard fans, four iconic schools—Conjuration, Enchantment, Necromancy, and Transmutation—are back with meaningful updates to make them more distinct and viable in modern play.
Meet the New Subclasses
The two totally new additions are:
- Tattooed Warrior (Monk):
Inspired by the Way of the Four Elements, this monk inscribes magical tattoos that let them cast spells, resist damage, and perform mystical feats. They spend Focus Points to fuel these abilities, blending martial arts with supernatural flair. - Ancestral Sorcerer (Sorcerer):
This sorcerer taps into the magic of a powerful ancestor. They boost Intelligence checks using Charisma, enhance classic spells like Dispel Magic and Counterspell, and gain stronger concentration and innate magic control.
What’s Next for These Subclasses?
It’s still unclear which upcoming D&D book these subclasses might land in. With Eberron: Forge of the Artificer arriving in August, an October horror-themed release, and November’s Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide, there are plenty of possibilities. Some speculate these subclasses might even be for yet-to-be-announced 2026 content, similar to the recent Psion class from May’s Unearthed Arcana.
