With the July 1 update to The Sims 4 base game, players now have even more ways to bring their whimsical nature builds to life.Â
This free update, clearly timed with the release of Enchanted by Nature, adds a cozy, overgrown charm to your builds — especially with the new ability to place plants directly on rooftops.
Whether you’re crafting a magical fairy cottage or a leafy greenhouse, here’s how to green up those rooftops in just a few steps.
How to Place Plants on Roofs in The Sims 4
A lot of plants in The Sims 4 live under the Decorations tab — but here’s the catch: most of these are considered indoor plants (since they come in vases or pots), and they won’t stick to roofs.
To get your plants up top, follow these steps:
- Enter Build Mode.
- Go to the Roof Sculptures category. You’ll recognize it by the chimney icon.
- Scroll through the available objects — you’ll now find several plant options specifically designed to be placed on rooftops.
- You can also head to the Outdoor Plants section. Check out the Shrubs and Flowers subcategory — some of these can also be placed on roofs.

A Few Quick Tips
- Make sure walls are up and you’re viewing the top floor of the house. Otherwise, the roof might not be visible, making plant placement tricky.
- Once everything’s set, just drag and drop your chosen plant onto the roof.
- Play around with the alt key for fine-tuning placement and rotate to get that perfect overgrown look.
That’s it! With this update, turning your Sims’ home into a nature-infused dream is easier than ever. Whether you’re going for cottagecore vibes or building a fairy tale hideout, roof plants are the perfect finishing touch.
