Mehrunes Razor Quest Guide – Oblivion Remastered
If you’re looking to add one of the most powerful weapons in Oblivion Remastered to your arsenal, Mehrunes Razor is a must-have. This legendary Daedric dagger has a small chance to instantly kill enemies on hit, and it’s tied to one of the game’s longest and most combat-heavy quests: Unearthing Mehrunes Razor.
Here’s how to start the quest, survive the caverns, and claim the blade for yourself.
🗺️ How to Start “Unearthing Mehrunes Razor”
To begin the quest:
- Travel to Sundercliff Watch, located east of Bravil in the lower region of Cyrodiil.
- Enter the cave and fight off the Drothmeri Soldiers guarding the entrance.
Eventually, you’ll reach a locked door with a cryptic message:
“A voice beyond the door calls out: Who gathers stormclouds over Nirn?”
To proceed:
- Look in the small sack to the right of the door.
- Read the diary inside to learn the password: “Chimer.”
Say the password to move deeper into the caverns.
📖 Finding Drothan’s Journal
You’ll soon be ambushed by more enemies. You can fight them, but it’s usually smarter to run past and keep heading forward.
- Go deeper into the caverns until you reach a drop leading to Sundercliff Village.
- Sneak or sprint through the bonfire area and enter the Sundercliff Commune.
- Cross the rope bridge and enter the house on the right—you’ll find Drothan’s Journal on a table.
The journal reveals you need two Bezoars to unseal a magical barrier guarding Varsa Balim, an ancient Ayleid city.
🧩 Collecting the Two Bezoars
- First Bezoar
- Exit the house and enter the commander’s house on the right.
- Defeat the Drothmeri Commander and loot the Bezoar from the table in his quarters.
- Exit the house and enter the commander’s house on the right.
- Second Bezoar
- Head to the Sundercliff Forge following the quest marker.
- In the open area with a tent, go into the Forgemaster’s tent and grab the second Bezoar from the table.
- Head to the Sundercliff Forge following the quest marker.
Once you have both, return to the Sundercliff Commune and drop down the ledge.
You’ll find two pedestals near a gateway—place the Bezoars there to open the way into Varsa Balim.
⚔️ Exploring Varsa Balim & Claiming Mehrunes Razor
- Follow the tight hallway until you reach the ruins of Varsa Balim.
- Save your health and potions—strong enemies lie ahead.
Path Through the Ruins:
- Head toward the main altar, then jump off the ledge on the right.
- Enter Cava Beldameld, fight your way through, and return to Varsa Balim.
- Head to the back of the room and enter Cava Marspanga.
- Carefully cross the broken pillars to reach the platform with glowing rocks.
- Descend the spiral staircase to enter the Nefarivigum.
🧠 Final Boss Fights & Getting Mehrunes Razor
- Defeat Frathen Drothan, the powerful wizard behind all of this.
- Interact with the statue holding a Beating Heart—loot it.
- Consume the Beating Heart from your inventory to trigger the final fight.
- Defeat Msirac Faythung, the last guardian standing between you and the blade.
After the fight, you’ll be able to finally claim Mehrunes Razor from the altar.
