The Alters is mostly a base-building sim with a healthy dose of resource management thrown in. Things start off simple enough, but it doesn’t take long before your base starts feeling way too small for everything you need to build.

The number of modules you’ll want to install quickly outgrows the default footprint—and if you don’t expand early, it can snowball into a lot of issues later on.

Seriously, missing the first expansion in Act 1 can lead to a chain reaction: grumpy Alters, depleted resources, and no storage space. It’s rough.

The good news? You can increase your base size—you just have to know where to look. Let’s break it all down.

What Does Increasing Qubit Level Do?

To increase your base size, you’ll need to:

  1. Upgrade your Qubit Level (via the Quantum Computer)
  2. Unlock Base Expansion II in the Research tab (under “Base”)

Once you hit Qubit Level 2, you’ll be able to research Base Expansion II, which gives you way more space for modules and boosts your Organics tank capacity to 450.

If you haven’t already figured out how to increase Qubit Level, check out our guide on that. It involves finding a Damaged Chip—which can be tricky—then crafting a Qubit Chip and applying the upgrade at the Quantum Computer.

Why the Bigger Base Matters

More space means more modules, which means more functionality, more efficiency, and way fewer headaches. That bigger Organics tank isn’t just a bonus either—it’s a must. As your base grows and your team of Alters multiplies, you’ll need more Organics to:

  • Move the base at the end of each act
  • Feed everyone
  • Fallback on for food, if things get desperate

There are better ways to make food than using Organics, but having a bigger buffer never hurts.

All Base Expansion Upgrades in The Alters

📈 Keep It Growing

Every expansion works the same way: upgrade your Qubit Level, then unlock the next expansion via Research. Here’s the full list:

  • Base Expansion II
    • Expands base space
    • Organics tank: 450
  • Base Expansion III
    • Requires Qubit Level 3
    • Expands base further
    • Organics tank: 700
  • Base Expansion IV
    • Requires Qubit Level 4
    • Final expansion
    • Organics tank: 800

Each one takes 14 in-game hours to research, and you’ll need a Scientist Alter to do it. Honestly, I’d suggest making a Scientist your second Alter—they’re one of the most valuable team members, hands down.

Also, you’ll need to unlock each expansion in order—you can’t skip ahead.

Tips for Optimizing Base Layout

🧠 Keep It Simple, Keep It Smart

As your base expands, it can turn into a messy maze fast. Here are a few layout tips to keep things efficient and easy to navigate:

  • Elevators in a straight column:
Take the time to restructure early. A vertical elevator shaft down the middle lets you reach every floor and saves space. It also makes the rest of your base easier to plan around.
  • Use Small Storage modules to patch gaps:
Got awkward empty spaces? Small Storage modules are perfect for squeezing into corners around bigger facilities.
  • Medium Storage at the top and bottom:
Thanks to their shorter, wider shape, they’re great for finishing off the top and bottom layers of your base grid without wasting space.
  • Don’t be afraid to reorganize:
Every time you unlock a new expansion, it’s worth reshuffling your modules. The new space almost always opens up a better layout, so move things around to make the most of it.

Increasing your base size isn’t just a nice upgrade—it’s a must if you want to survive The Alters without getting boxed in by your own progress. Plan ahead, prioritize your Qubit Level, and don’t let your base turn into a claustrophobic mess.
