Heavy Spoiler Warning: This article contains major story spoilers for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Read at your own risk if you haven’t completed the game yet.
After Death Stranding, fans were left with the emotional image of Sam and BB-28, now named Louise (Lou), finally together and off the grid. Sam left his porter duties behind to live a quiet life with Lou—his daughter in every sense of the word. But in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, hints dropped through trailers suggested something terrible had happened to her. So, what exactly happens to Lou in the sequel?

Lou’s Fate in Death Stranding 2
After disconnecting Lou from the BB pod, Sam moved to Mexico, hiding away from the world while raising Lou. Fragile eventually tracks him down, once again asking him to join her organization, Drawbridge. This time, Sam agrees, leaving Lou in Fragile’s care as he heads out on another journey.
Shortly after, Sam’s shelter is attacked by mech soldiers. Fragile tries to escape with Lou on her unicycle but is shot down. Sam rushes back after receiving an emergency alert, only to find the shelter in ruins and Fragile gravely injured.
When she wakes, Fragile painfully confesses she failed to save Lou. She tried to make Lou jump—or jump away with her—but couldn’t. It’s implied that a mech soldier shot Lou, and we see a brief, heartbreaking scene of Fragile reaching out to her on the beach.
But then something strange happens. A tiny BT with wings appears and enters the BB pod, suggesting that while Lou’s body (Ha) may have died, her soul (Ka) remained behind. Sam, now broken but not defeated, carries the pod on his journey to Australia, holding onto the small hope that Lou’s essence is still with him.

The Truth About Lou and Sam’s Past
As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that Sam had been carrying an empty BB pod all along. The Lou he saw wasn’t real—it was a hallucination, a way to shield himself from the pain of her supposed death. In truth, it was Doll Man, not Lou, who helped Sam see BTs through the Odratek system.
This isn’t the end of the revelations. We also learn more about BB-28’s origins. BB-28—Lou—is Sam’s biological child, whom he believed died in a voidout with his pregnant wife, Lucy Bridges. Because Sam is a repatriate, he survived, but always thought both Lucy and their child were gone. Lou was taken from the womb and turned into a BB without Sam ever knowing the truth.

Is Tomorrow Really Lou?
Yes—Tomorrow is Lou, and the reveal is one of the biggest twists in the game.
Throughout the game, Higgs taunts Sam about not truly knowing his BB. Later, it’s revealed that Higgs was the one behind the attack on Sam’s shelter and that he kidnapped Tomorrow, teleporting her to the beach to trigger a final extinction event. After an intense guitar-powered boss battle, Sam rescues her—but still doesn’t realize who she is.
The truth comes later. Sam returns to the DHV Magellan, only to find that Fragile is dead. In a final memory surge, she recalls what really happened on the day of the attack.
Fragile wasn’t trying to save Lou—Lou saved her. When Fragile was shot by Higgs, Lou made the jump herself to the beach, sacrificing everything to protect Fragile. Fragile, realizing Lou was safer on the beach, left her there with the souls of the dead. Time moves differently on the beach, so Lou grew up into Tomorrow, cared for by Neil, who had promised Lucy he’d protect her child.
Unknowingly, Sam had already rescued Tomorrow, never realizing she was his daughter. It all comes together in the game’s final moments—and hits hard.

Final Confirmation and Tease for Death Stranding 3
In the end, Lou is not dead. She is Tomorrow, played by Elle Fanning, and she is reunited with her father after years apart—though neither fully knew it until the truth came out. The mid-credits scene of Death Stranding: On the Beach strongly hints that Lou will be the main protagonist if Hideo Kojima ever decides to make Death Stranding 3.
Kojima once again proves he’s a master of emotional storytelling. With Death Stranding 2, he delivers a powerful and personal twist that deepens the bond between Sam and Lou and redefines the entire journey.
