Lost Planet 2’s latest PC update removes Games for Windows Live, killing co-op play—unless Capcom steps in. Fans hope it’s not the end for this beloved cult classic.
Well, this one hurts. A new update just rolled out for Lost Planet 2 on PC, and it might’ve quietly knocked the legs out from under the whole game. Capcom has removed support for Games for Windows Live—the old, clunky service that used to handle the game’s online multiplayer. And without it, connecting with friends to take down giant Akrid monsters? Yeah… that might be over.
Released back in 2010, Lost Planet 2 always marched to the beat of its own drum. While the first and third games leaned heavily into narrative-driven campaigns, LP2 was unapologetically multiplayer-focused. The story? Just enough to justify throwing you and your squad into massive firefights across the harsh terrain of EDN 3. The real fun was co-op—storming bases, fighting off colossal creatures, and watching chaos unfold with your teammates by your side.
Now, that core experience might be gone. The recent Steam update stripped out Games for Windows Live, which—despite being ancient and mostly forgotten—was still the only way players could match into co-op sessions on PC. Without a backup system in place, Lost Planet 2’s online features are basically toast.

Fans didn’t take long to notice. Reddit user SuperscooterXD and others quickly flagged the issue, voicing concern that multiplayer could be “virtually impossible” unless Capcom adds something to replace GFWL. And yeah, it sucks. This wasn’t just a game—it was a chaotic, messy, beautiful co-op gem from the Xbox 360 era. For those who still revisit it or were hoping to someday, it’s a gut punch.
After nearly four years of silence, Lost Planet 2 on Steam received a small update that removes GFWL, as well as online functionality any previous local save data

But hey, it’s not all doom and gloom. Some hopeful fans are pointing to what happened with Resident Evil 5. That game also had its GFWL bits removed recently, but Capcom stepped up and patched in Steamworks support—a more modern way to handle multiplayer through Steam. So maybe, just maybe, this update is step one of something better.
And here’s the spicy part: some folks are speculating that this could even be setting the stage for a Lost Planet comeback. Sounds wild, but if Capcom is thinking of reviving the franchise, keeping the older games playable would totally make sense.
Until then, we wait. Fingers crossed Capcom hears the community and gets a fix in place soon. Because even after all these years, there’s still a crew out there who just wants to fire up Lost Planet 2, link up with some friends, and go Akrid hunting one more time.
