Marvel Rivals has tweaked its ranked surrender system, making it easier for players to escape matches that have been wrecked by smurfs, throwers, or general chaos. The change is rolling out with the game’s next update on June 26, arriving in the back half of Season 2: Hellfire Gala.
This update comes shortly after the addition of Ultron to the roster, following Emma Frost as the latest support hero introduced this season.
Smurfs and Throwers Have Been Ruining Ranked
Lately, ranked matches in Marvel Rivals have been a mess for a lot of players. Smurfs—experienced players on alternate, low-ranked accounts—have been tearing through casual lobbies, while throwers are intentionally sabotaging games when things don’t go their way. It’s been frustrating.
NetEase previously tried to deal with this by softening the penalties for losing games affected by these issues. But players didn’t feel like that went far enough.
New Surrender Rules Kick In on June 26
Now, NetEase is going a step further by adjusting how surrenders work in ranked mode. Before, a full team of five had to all agree to forfeit a match. If even one person wanted to keep going, the game continued.
With the new system, the number of votes required to surrender scales with how many players are still in the match. So if your team is down to four players, you only need three votes to surrender instead of all four.
This change gives teams stuck in unwinnable situations a better chance to bow out gracefully without being punished too harshly.
But Could It Be Abused?
Of course, while this is a win for players stuck in sabotaged matches, it might also make it a little too easy to bail on games. There’s concern that teams could start surrendering too early just to avoid rank losses, even when the match is still winnable.
It’s a delicate balance—one that will need some monitoring in the weeks ahead to make sure it’s being used as intended, not exploited.
What’s Next?
With Season 2 heading toward its conclusion, players can expect some kind of update or announcement about Season 3 soon. Until then, this surrender change is the big update going live tomorrow.
Hopefully, it helps take some of the frustration out of ranked play—especially for those who’ve been dealing with the worst kinds of teammates lately.
