The wait is finally over—Castle Crashers is getting new content! The long-anticipated Painter Boss Paradise DLC now has an official release date: August 6, 2025. But before you get too hyped, here’s the catch—it’s only coming to Steam.
Developed by U.S. indie darling The Behemoth, Castle Crashers made its debut back in August 2008 as an Xbox 360 exclusive. It quickly became one of the top-rated Xbox Live Arcade titles of its time. Over the years, it got ported to PS3, Xbox One, and PC, and it saw four DLC drops—the last one being the Blacksmith Pack in August 2011.

Now, after nearly 13 years, The Behemoth is back with the game’s fifth DLC: Painter Boss Paradise. Announced in July 2024, the add-on introduces a character creator, Steam Workshop support, and a brand-new playable character called Paint Junior. The release date was confirmed through a brand-new gameplay trailer that also encourages players to start crafting their own templates for use in the game.
Here’s the scoop:
Painter Boss Paradise DLC – Details
- 🗓 Release Date: August 6, 2025, at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 7pm CET
- 💻 Platform: Steam only
- 💵 Price: $3.99
The big new feature here is user-generated content. You’ll be able to create your own characters and weapons using templates and upload them to the Steam Workshop. However, keep in mind that all creations must follow Steam’s Subscriber Agreement and UGC rules—so no copyrighted stuff, just original designs.
Even if you don’t own the DLC, you can still use Workshop content in multiplayer—as long as you’re playing with someone who does. In that case, you’ll only have access to the content they’ve imported and shared.
Besides the new character and customization options, Painter Boss Paradise will also give a visual refresh to all existing characters and weapons. That said, the DLC won’t add any new levels or bosses—it’s more about expanding how you play than where you play.
Oh, and don’t worry—The Behemoth has confirmed there will be no monetization for user-created content in this DLC, even though Steam technically allows it. So, everything made in Painter Boss Paradise stays free.
After nearly two decades, Castle Crashers is still going strong, and this DLC looks like a fun new chapter for fans—especially those who love getting creative.
