Evidence keeps piling up that Rockstar Games might be prepping a Grand Theft Auto 4 remaster or port, and the latest hint has fans buzzing. The Rockstar Games support website now lists the 2008 classic as available for PlayStation 4—a platform the game has never actually launched on. While Rockstar is currently gearing up for the massive release of Grand Theft Auto 6, it’s starting to look like a re-release of GTA 4 might sneak in beforehand.

GTA 4 originally hit shelves in 2008 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and it’s still considered one of the best entries in the series. Even after 17 years, fans are still diving back into Liberty City—though mostly on older consoles or PC.

Xbox players do have the benefit of backward compatibility on newer hardware, but PlayStation fans have been asking for a remaster or at least a port for ages.

A full-on remaster doesn’t seem super likely, but signs are pointing to a possible PS4 version, which would also open the door for PS5 players to access it via forward compatibility.

Earlier this year, a well-known insider claimed Rockstar has been quietly working on a current-gen port of GTA 4 for over a year, with a possible release window later this year.

That hasn’t been confirmed by Rockstar, but the new listing on their support site definitely raises eyebrows. Sure, it could be a simple mistake—but given the timing, that feels like a big coincidence.

Could Rockstar Be Outsourcing the Port?

With GTA 6 just 10 months out, it’s safe to assume most of Rockstar’s internal team is laser-focused on finishing that project. When they dropped Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition back in 2021, Rockstar outsourced the work to Grove Street Games. It’s totally possible they’re taking a similar approach here—handing off the GTA 4 port to a third-party team while they finish up GTA 6.

Rumors and speculation have been spreading fast in the GTA community, and fans are definitely excited about the idea. And it’s not just the fanbase pushing for this—former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij chimed in recently, saying GTA 4 is a “great game” and deserves a remaster.

Here’s hoping Rockstar is listening and gives GTA 4 the re-release it deserves—at least before GTA 6 takes over everyone’s lives next year.
