The Pokémon TCG scene just took a dark turn IRL, and no—we’re not talking about a bad trade or scalper drama at a pre-release event.
A card shop in Japan was recently robbed, and the biggest plot twist? The guy behind it was allegedly the manager of a rival trading card shop… literally just down the street. Yeah, this is straight out of a TV crime drama—except it’s over Charizards, not diamonds.

What Happened?
According to reports from Automaton, Japanese police arrested a 35-year-old man on July 9, 2025, for his role in robbing a Pokémon card shop. But this wasn’t some masked stranger. The dude is the manager of another TCG store nearby—one that also sells Pokémon and One Piece cards.
Let that sink in: a guy who literally runs his own shop decided to rob another one in the same neighborhood, allegedly stealing $94,000 worth of cards and cash, and threatening the shop owner with a knife.
And it gets worse.
This Wasn’t a Solo Operation
Turns out this wasn’t a one-man heist. The manager was actually the third person arrested in connection to the crime. Authorities had already picked up two other accomplices before him—and the shop owner claims more suspects are still out there.
In a bold post on X (formerly Twitter), the victim publicly called out those still on the run:
“Thinking you won’t get caught is impossible. We will absolutely catch everyone.”
Talk about not pulling punches.
Why Pokémon Cards Are Prime Targets
Let’s be real—Pokémon TCG isn’t just a childhood hobby anymore. Some cards are worth thousands, and rare items can go for the price of a used car. Combine that with limited print runs, high demand, and resale hype? You’ve got a black-market recipe just waiting to boil over.
In fact, we’ve seen this pattern before. Pokémon cards have been stolen from stores, broken into during events, and even caused physical altercations between players. It’s the wild west out there in cardboard land.
What This Means for the TCG Community
The real kicker here is the fact that the thief was someone inside the TCG industry. Not some random, but a manager trusted with running a business in the same space. That’s got serious implications for how shops trust each other, share community events, and do business locally.
It’s also a reminder that the value of these collectibles comes with real-world risk—and the Pokémon TCG world might need more security than just a glass case and a friendly face behind the counter.
Be Safe Out There
Pokémon TCG is a blast—whether you’re cracking packs, building decks, or chasing that shiny Umbreon. But stories like this remind us that when the stakes get too high, things can spiral fast.
So to all the store owners, collectors, and players out there:
Watch your six, protect your stash, and maybe don’t keep $94K in cards sitting near the front door.
And if you’re thinking about robbing a TCG shop? Maybe just enter a tournament instead. It’s way less jail time.
